Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) was an English philosopher, political theorist, and writer best known for Leviathan (1651), a foundational work of modern political philosophy and social-contract theory. He also wrote De Cive, De Corpore, Behemoth, and translations and commentaries on classical history, developing influential arguments about human nature, government, sovereignty, and civil order.
