Martin Cruz Smith was an American novelist and journalist best known for international mystery and thriller fiction. After beginning his career as a journalist and writing several novels under pseudonyms, he achieved a major breakthrough with Gorky Park (1981), which introduced Moscow investigator Arkady Renko and launched a celebrated series. His work often combines intricate detective plots with political, historical, and geopolitical themes, and earned him major crime-fiction honors including the Hammett Prize and the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award.
