Paul Kalanithi was an American neurosurgeon and writer whose essays on medicine, illness, mortality, and meaning appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Stanford Medicine. His memoir, When Breath Becomes Air, was published posthumously in 2016, became a New York Times bestseller, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He died of lung cancer in March 2015 at age 37.
