C. S. Forester (1899–1966), the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith, was an English novelist, journalist, and screenwriter. He began his writing career with biographies and historical works before gaining recognition with the crime thriller Payment Deferred (1926) and naval fiction such as Brown on Resolution. He became best known for the eleven-volume Horatio Hornblower saga, set during the Napoleonic Wars, and also wrote The African Queen, military novels, war stories, and nonfiction histories.
