Sir Martin Gilbert (1936–2015) was a British historian and prolific author of more than eighty books. Appointed Winston Churchill’s official biographer in 1968, he completed a major multivolume life of Churchill while also writing acclaimed works on the First and Second World Wars, the twentieth century, Israel, Jewish history, and the Holocaust.
