Stephanie Merritt is an English literary critic and novelist who was deputy literary editor of The Observer from 1998 to 2005 and has written for The Observer and The Guardian. She writes contemporary novels under her own name, including While You Sleep, and historical crime thrillers featuring Giordano Bruno under the pseudonym S. J. Parris; her debut novel, Gaveston, won the Betty Trask Award in 2002.
