Georges Bataille (1897–1962) was a French writer, philosopher, librarian, and literary critic whose career crossed avant-garde literature, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and art history. Writing under pseudonyms including Lord Auch, he produced erotic fiction, novels, poetry, essays, and major works of philosophical and social theory, including Story of the Eye, The Accursed Share, Erotism, and Literature and Evil. His work is known for exploring transgression, eroticism, sacrifice, mysticism, and the limits of rational thought.
