E. C. R. Lorac was the principal pseudonym of British crime writer Edith Caroline Rivett (1894–1958), who also wrote as Carol Carnac and Mary Le Bourne. She published her first detective novel, The Murder on the Burrows, in 1931 and went on to write more than 40 mysteries featuring Chief Inspector Robert Macdonald, along with numerous other crime novels. A member and later secretary of the Detection Club, she was a prolific Golden Age detective-fiction author whose work has been rediscovered through modern British Library reprints.
