George Sand was the pen name of French novelist Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin (1804–1876). She began writing professionally in Paris and adopted the name George Sand when her first major novel, Indiana, was published in 1832. Her prolific career included romantic, socially engaged, and pastoral novels—such as Consuelo, The Devil's Pool, La Petite Fadette, and François le Champi—as well as plays, essays, journalism, and autobiographical writing.
