Jean de La Bruyère (1645–1696) was a French essayist and moralist who served as a tutor in the household of Louis XIV’s grandson. His major work, Les Caractères, first published in 1688, combined a translation of Theophrastus with incisive character sketches and topical essays satirizing the manners and social pretensions of contemporary France. He was elected to the Académie française in 1693.
