Tim O'Brien (born 1946) is an American novelist, memoirist, and short-story writer whose career began with his 1973 Vietnam War memoir If I Die in a Combat Zone. Drawing on his military service, he became known for blending autobiographical experience with fiction in works such as Going After Cacciato, which won the 1979 National Book Award, and The Things They Carried. He has also written about fatherhood, contemporary America, and postwar life, and has taught creative writing at Texas State University.
