Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839–1908) was a Brazilian novelist, short-story writer, journalist, critic, poet, and playwright. He began publishing as a teenager and built his literary career through newspapers, magazines, serialized fiction, and books. His first novel, Ressurreição, appeared in 1872; Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881) marked his mature, innovative realist period. He was a founder and the first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
