William Golding (1911–1993) was a British novelist, poet, and playwright whose writing career began with the poetry collection Poems in 1934. His first novel, Lord of the Flies (1954), established his reputation for exploring civilization, savagery, morality, and the darker aspects of human nature; he went on to write thirteen novels, including The Inheritors, Pincher Martin, The Spire, and the Sea Trilogy. Golding won the Booker Prize in 1980 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983.
