Mieko Kawakami is a Japanese novelist, poet, and former singer-songwriter from Osaka who began publishing fiction in the 2000s. She won the Akutagawa Prize for Breasts and Eggs and has since gained international recognition for novels including Heaven, All the Lovers in the Night, and Sisters in Yellow. Her writing explores gender, class, sexuality, the body, family, and ethics in contemporary Japanese society, and her books have been translated into more than forty languages.
