Mark B. Smith is an associate professor of modern history at the University of Cambridge and a specialist in Soviet and modern Russian history. He began his writing career with scholarly work on Soviet cities, housing, class, and welfare, including Property of Communists: The Urban Housing Program from Stalin to Khrushchev. He later wrote the general-history books The Russia Anxiety: And How History Can Resolve It and Exit Stalin: The Soviet Union as a Civilization, 1953–1991.
