Barry Hannah (1942–2010) was an American novelist and short-story writer from Mississippi whose career was rooted in Southern fiction. His first novel, Geronimo Rex (1972), earned critical acclaim, while Airships (1978) established his reputation as a major short-fiction writer. He later taught creative writing at several universities and directed the MFA program at the University of Mississippi, where he mentored writers including Donna Tartt and Larry Brown.
