John Spencer is a retired U.S. Army officer and combat veteran who writes military nonfiction about urban warfare, leadership, unit cohesion, and modern conflict. He is the author of Connected Soldiers, Understanding Urban Warfare, The Mini-Manual for the Urban Defender, and Twenty Times I Almost Died, and has also contributed numerous essays, book chapters, and military case studies. He has served as chair of urban warfare studies, a West Point-affiliated researcher and instructor, and a military analyst.
