John Taylor Gatto was an American schoolteacher, author, and education critic who taught in New York City public schools for nearly 30 years. After retiring in 1991 as New York State Teacher of the Year, he launched a writing and speaking career focused on the history, ideology, and effects of compulsory schooling. He is best known for Dumbing Us Down, The Underground History of American Education, and Weapons of Mass Instruction.
