Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374), known in English as Petrarch, was an Italian poet, scholar, and pioneer of Renaissance humanism. He is best known for Il Canzoniere, a sequence of lyric poems—many addressed to the idealized Laura—that helped establish and popularize the Italian sonnet. He also wrote Latin poetry, including the epic Africa, as well as letters, essays, and works of classical scholarship.
