Théophile Gautier (1811–1872) was a French poet, novelist, journalist, art critic, and literary critic. He began as a Romantic poet, publishing Albertus in 1832, then became a leading advocate of l’art pour l’art through works such as Mademoiselle de Maupin, Émaux et Camées, and his fantastic and historical fiction. He also wrote influential travel literature, theater criticism, and journalism for major Parisian publications.
