Hugh John Lofting (1886–1947) was an English-American author and illustrator best known for creating Doctor Dolittle. Originally trained as a civil engineer, he turned to writing in 1912; stories he wrote in letters to his children while serving in World War I became The Story of Doctor Dolittle, published in 1920. He went on to write and illustrate a popular series of Doctor Dolittle books, with The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle winning the Newbery Medal.
