Arthur Schnitzler (1862–1931) was an Austrian writer and dramatist and a leading figure of Viennese modernism. After training and practicing as a physician, he devoted himself to writing, producing influential plays, novellas, short stories, and novels. His psychologically acute works explore love, sexuality, death, social class, morality, and the tension between reality and illusion, often using interior monologue and subjective narration.
