Prosper Mérimée (1803–1870) was a French Romantic writer best known for his tightly constructed novellas and short stories. He began his literary career with dramatic works and literary hoaxes, then established his reputation through historical and culturally exotic fiction such as Mateo Falcone, Colomba, Carmen, and The Venus of Ille. His clear, restrained prose and psychological intensity made him one of the major French masters of nineteenth-century short fiction.
