Sayaka Murata is a Japanese novelist and short-story writer whose fiction examines conformity, gender, family, work, sexuality, and the boundaries of what society considers normal. She began writing stories as a child, resumed during university, and later worked for many years in convenience stores while developing her literary career. Her breakthrough novel, Convenience Store Woman, won Japan’s Akutagawa Prize and brought her international recognition; her books have since been translated widely and include Earthlings, Vanishing World, and Life Ceremony.
