Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and journalist. He began his literary career with Poor Folk (1845), then developed a distinctive body of psychologically intense and philosophically searching fiction after imprisonment and exile in Siberia. His major works include Notes from the Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov.
