Hannah Webster Foster (1758–1840) was an American novelist who began writing political articles for Boston newspapers in the 1770s. Publishing under the pseudonym “A Lady of Massachusetts,” she wrote the influential sentimental epistolary novel The Coquette; or, The History of Eliza Wharton (1797) and the fictional-didactic work The Boarding School; or, Lessons of a Preceptress to Her Pupils (1798), after which she continued contributing short articles to newspapers.
