Clement Clarke Moore (1779–1863) was an American poet, scholar, and professor best known for “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” popularly called “The Night Before Christmas,” first published anonymously in 1823. He also wrote Poems (1844), a Hebrew lexicon, a translation on sheep breeding, and a historical biography of Scanderbeg, while publishing poetry in periodicals and teaching Oriental and Greek literature at the General Theological Seminary.
