Anzia Yezierska (1880–1970) was a Jewish-American novelist and short-story writer who immigrated from Poland and grew up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Beginning in the 1910s, she wrote acclaimed fiction about Jewish immigrant life, poverty, assimilation, gender, and the pursuit of the American dream, often drawing on her own experiences. Her best-known works include Hungry Hearts, Salome of the Tenements, and Bread Givers; she also briefly worked in Hollywood and later regained recognition through feminist and literary scholarship.
