John W. Campbell Jr. (1910–1971) was an American science fiction writer and editor who began publishing in 1930, writing galactic space opera under his own name and more sophisticated speculative fiction as Don A. Stuart. He became editor of Astounding Stories in 1937 and led it, later as Astounding Science Fiction and Analog, until his death, helping define science fiction’s Golden Age and advancing the careers of writers including Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein. His best-known fiction includes the 1938 novella Who Goes There?, later adapted as The Thing.
